A Caribbean WeddingMoon...

If you haven’t heard of a WeddingMoon before…it’s rather new, yet more and more couples are choosing to tie the knot in an exotic locale and combine their wedding with the honeymoon. And, while you might think that a WeddingMoon is more suited to couples remarrying, this isn’t necessarily the case. The "WeddingMoon" offers couples a relatively inexpensive way to combine the wedding and honeymoon because it significantly cuts down your wedding reception guest list - many guests simply can not afford the trip, or the time off from work, to travel to an exotic locale for a wedding.

There are many resorts from Sandals to Walt Disney World which offer destination weddings or "WeddingMoon" packages but you should be aware that if a package is offered free as part of a honeymoon stay it is often based on a required minimum stay and is usually only a "basic wedding package" - many add-ons are extra. Additionally, if you are marrying in a foreign country, you may be required to fly into the country a few days
prior to your wedding.  You'll

want to research all the details as carefully as you would anything else and make sure that its right for you.

So, from a first-hand perspective, what’s a "Weddingmoon" really like? We asked MaryJane & Chuck of Cape May, NJ who were married on April 29, 2000 in Negril, Jamaica at Sandals. Their beachfront wedding offered an idyllic setting for their ceremony and while their guest list was rather small it seemed like a perfect fit for this couple.

"Initially we started planning a big wedding but my mom was one of thirteen so it started turning into a fiasco. Also, because we run a seasonal business - Hinch Marina in Cape May - we wouldn’t have been able to get married during the summer and neither one of us wanted to get married in winter down here."

Instead MaryJane and Chuck had a small wedding in Negril, Jamaica. Their guests were the bride’s parents, the groom's aunt & uncle, the best man and maid of honor along with a few other couples who were also getting married at the resort. "Initially I had some misgivings with my friends not being there, but they vanished when we met people down there who attended our wedding. People at the resort were either on their honeymoon or were there getting married…you meet so many people."

To plan their "Weddingmoon," MaryJane & Chuck used Beach Bum Vacations which specializes in Caribbean travel and honeymoons. "Hayley was great…she handled everything regarding what we needed to do from the licensing to planning with the wedding coordinator in the islands. There are many preplanned packages but there are lots of different options - you can put in special requests, get a band, pretty much anything you want."

"We spent 8 days at the resort. We had to fly in a few days before the wedding and the only downside was carrying the wedding gown & tuxedo on the airplane but the stewardess hung them in first class and we even could have had my dress ironed at the resort.
"We were married at 10am on April 29th.  After the wedding we had a luncheon on the beach with cake.  Then that night we had a dinner at one of the restaurants on the resort with my family."

"The food is phenomenal at Sandals. They had 5 different restaurants on the complex including a formal restaurant "The Sundowner," a Japanese Sushi Restaurant and the Main Room where they served buffets and desserts. Luckily the wedding was only 2 days after I got to the resort, otherwise I never would have fit into my dress."

"The day after the wedding my family flew back home and I started to relax." (Before the wedding).."you’re worrying about everything. We had a beautiful two story room at Sandals with its own mini-bar and we even had our own personal 'perks concierge'."

On the resort we hung out with 2 other couples who also got married on the resort. At night we wouldn’t go off the resort, but during the day there are lots of people organizing activities for you from bus trips for shopping to treasure hunts. We went to Rick’s Café and saw divers jumping off the cliff. We also went scuba diving. I took a lesson at the resort…my husband is 1 dive away from his certification - he took scuba diving lessons locally in South Jersey. They also have snorkeling and kayaks and the water was perfect!

"When we got back from Jamaica we celebrated with a nice big barbecue with all our friends and showed the video from our wedding."
